Abstract

This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the health literacy of patients diagnosed with chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes) during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 124,548 subjects who participated in the 2021 Community Health Survey were included in this study. We enrolled adults aged 19 years or above diagnosed with chronic diseases (hypertension and/or diabetes), without cognitive impairments, and with no missing values for the study variables. SPSS 25.0 was used for complex sample analysis. The analysis identified age, education level, economic activity, monthly income, subjective health, smoking, physical activity, depression, and concerns about COVID-19 as factors affecting language and text health literacy, while gender was found to only affect language health literacy. This study is meaningful as it identifies the factors affecting the health literacy of patients with chronic diseases residing in local communities in a COVID-19 situation. Further, it provides baseline data to develop and enhance nursing interventions for such patients.
